Course Description
Exposure to crystalline silica, a dangerous substance in high doses, is an inherent occupational risk for many workers.
From building and construction workers, jewellery industry workers and even do it yourself (DIY) enthusiasts, having awareness of crystalline silica, and how to minimise exposure to this substance, is a key to safety on the job.
This course covers a range of topics, including:
Identification of crystalline silica containing products
The relevant legislation, guidelines and standards
The consequences, hazards and risks to health due to exposure
Exposure standards
Safety data sheets
Hierarchy of controls
Systems for prevention of exposure
Risk assessments and hazard prevention
The course may help you meet your lawful obligations to Part 3.2, Division 7, Clause 49 of the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011
10830NAT Course in Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention, is to be delivered as per Australian Skills Quality Authority ASQUA requirements.
Creative Safety Initiatives (CSI) have developed this Nationally accredited course in Crystalline Silica Awareness to promote health and safety within the workplace, helping build awareness of the risks and helping avoid dangerous exposure to this substance.
As part of the course, participants will learn to recognise the workplace health and safety risks and hazards inherent in working with crystalline silica containing products, and to determine and plan for the implementation of safe systems of work aimed at reducing exposure to within mandatory exposure limits.
In addition, participants will be able to identify and apply the following knowledge within the context of their job roles for their own safety and the safety of fellow workers and bystanders.

Entry Requirements
Unique Student Identifier (USI)
It is an industry requirement that all students have a registered Unique Student Identifier (USI) Number. This number is required for all students to apply for enrollment to this course. Student name on enrolment and all course information must match the name used for the USI number. If name is not correct to the USI, then delays may occur in the issuing of the certification.
Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.
An individual undertaking this course with Creative Safety Initiatives (CSI) will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:
Proof of age must be 14 years or over.
If under 18 years of age have a parent or legal guardian to co-sign your application to this course
Valid working email address to receive your certificate

Course Durations
Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.
Face-to-Face contact time of at least 4 Hours.
Students are to arrive to the training venue prior to the start time as identified within the booking information, if a student is more than 10 minutes late, then the student may not be able to continue with the course resulting with the student to re-book in the course at another time.

Free GAP Price: $300.00 GST free
For participants to be eligible for the GAP price, they must meet the requirements from the ACT Building and Construction Industry Training Fund Authority Training fund authority. An Eligible person is any person usually working in or in connection with the building and construction industry in the ACT who is substantially (at least 80%) performing “work liable for the training levy” or is a person deemed as an eligible person on application to the authority.

Course delivery location
This course can be delivered and assessed in the workplace or at facility organised between the primary organiser that has made contact with Capital WHS directly. The facility is to be suited in resources and physical space required to ensure certification requirements are compliant.

Performance tasks and practical scenarios:
Assessment of this unit consists of three assessment tasks:
Answering a series of multiple choice and short answer written questions.
Answering a series of short answers to oral questions.
Class participation and engagement.

Interpreters and Translators
This course is delivered in English (Aus) of which all participants are required to comprehend, understand and write English for equitable required outcome for all involved.
If a student is not able to comprehend, understand or write English (Aus), then the student is required to organise their own interpreters / translator of which are to always act in accordance with the standards of conduct and decorum appropriate to the aims of AUSIT, the national professional association of interpreting and translation practitioners. Interpreters and translators are to assist with information and not to populate answers unless permitted by the trainer / assessor. Population of any assessment information is to be redirected from the person that requires the language to be translated from their first language to English. The candidate can use electronic translator devices provided the trainer / assessor has agreed to the use and that the devise is not providing informed answers, nepotism or plagiarising the assessment outcomes. Translator and or Interpreters are not charged to participate in the course.
Training fund
An Eligible Person is any person working in, or in connection with a company in the building and construction industry in the ACT who is performing work that is substantially (at least 80%) performing “work liable for the training levy” or is a person deemed as an eligible person on application to the authority.
This can include employers, employees, or independent contractors. Training funds must be applied for, and participants are required to contribute to the training costs and under this program participants must be actively working as employees, employers or independent contractors.
